Lumberjack Cabinet Minutes

It’s 10 o’clock, and attendance is sparse! Mark keeps motioning to impeach everyone. “Anarchy!” cries Becky Zaunbrecher. Carole starts without everyone. Ruthie is not here, and she is swiftly impeached. Emily and Gabi are not here, but Emily has a proxy. Gabi is impeached. This is a bloodbath. The OC reps are HEE-YER!!! And everyone else is too. We get started.

ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Plaid Mark Plitt reminds us about all the cool associates events going on. Team Running Wiess just started up this week. All-star associate Miki Hebl, veteran marathoner (she’s run one in almost every state!) is hosting these runs – everyone is welcome! And, everyone who logs 20 miles gets a free t-shirt!

Dr. Fred Oswald, another of our all-star associates, is a national Scrabble champion. So naturally, we need to have a Words With Friends tournament!Email Mark to be put in a bracket.

Lastly, there will be a wine tasting on Saturday, Oct 15th for Wiessmen of age. Email Mark to RSVP!

Gabi comes bearing beer and Diet Coke! We unimpeach Gabi swiftly.

Charlie says that H&D wants to start fining the friendly, social folks who bolt their doors. Did you know, it’s actually a part of the housing policy that you can’t bolt your doors? I didn’t, and they’ve never enforced it before, but Charlie and Dr. Byrd are working with H&D to come up with a solution.

In the mean time, H&D is having the (really nice!) members of the housekeeping staff write down names of people who are breaking the rule. So don’t bolt your doors, sadface.
BUDGET!

Erika and Alisher have the same story: we started the year in the hole. They’re working in taking money out of H-funds. H-funds are where the chunk of our Wiess money is. They were started by donors a long, long time ago.
SA SHENANIGANS

Monica’s proxy brings us the lastest. RechargeU is experimenting with their hours. She tells us to go there late at night so that they’ll want to stay open later, permanently.

What’s black, white, and not read all over? Newspapers, of course! But the SA’s introduced a resolution to fix that. Their idea is to increase college fees per student by $5 to bring newspapers back to the colleges. The SA is already interested in that, so now they want to know if each college is interested in it. Color us interested, SA! We miss our Times and our Chronicle.

Dean Hutch also mentioned a writing center – they want Rice to have one.

OFFICER RASH

Confirms that tonight, RUPD caught summore bike thieves, yee-haw!

He said they caught the bad guys largely because of the “model caller” who reported suspicious activity outside the rec center. To be a model caller, he says, give a description of the suspicious person(s) from the top down, and stay on the line the whole time you speak with RUPD.

PHILS

Liz says the Phils want the Wiess commons – wait for it – to put on a FREE concert. The alumni bbq is that weekend, but we think it’ll be okay. By the way, that bbq is the Wilson House opening up on Saturday, November 5th. So, the only problem is that if it rains, we might need to use the commons, but otherwise, it shouldn’t be a problem.

TABLETOP

Liz and Ian want to open the tabletop budget to get lumber and costumes for their new play, “Chatroom.” The motion passes!

NOD
Gabi introduces us to the new Emily, BC. They ask to open the NOD Budget so they can give us a NOD. We do!

They also give us big news! This year, Wiess is getting a free ambulance for NOD, which is awesome, because ambulance’s are expensive. Back story: Dean Hutchinson would like to see an ambulance at every public party from now on. Though, to help encourage responsible drinking, Dean Hutch doesn’t want the students to know about this parked ambulance. Charlie points out that he doesn’t know how many people want to get way too wasted just so they can take an ambulance ride. But we are happy and will keep Dean Hutch’s secret, winkyface.

GENDER NEUTRAL HOUSING, WOOT!
Charlie says that Rice is instituting a policy in which students can choose whomever they want to room with, regardless of everyone’s sex. They felt it was in line with the equal opportunity policy at Rice. Dean Hutchinson and the masters took it to President Leebron, and he agreed with it. So, come spring – when we pick roommates and stuff, that’s in effect!

Right now, not all colleges have the same policy. Some colleges allow gender neutral housing, and some require permission from masters and parents. But this was unanimous: Rice students are adults, so we can decide with whom we want to house ourselves!

Bekah points out that in theory, you could live with people you’re dating. Hey-o! But the bottom line is, as long as all of your suitemates agree, you’re golden. Rod!
UCOURT

Speaking of free ambulances that we shouldn’t have to use…Lauren, is our Wiess UCourt Rep! As the Wiess UCourt Rep, she will be the ombuds for any Wiessman who’s cited for a violation. She’ll be there for you, and help you understand everything.

Lauren also encourages everyone to go to their website: sjp.rice.edu/ucourt. There, you can check out the UCourt constitution and the “Sparknotes” of the alcohol policy and student code of conduct.

Q&A: Mark asks if her shirt is held together with tape or clothespins. Other than the fact that her shirt is a lovely blue plaid, I don’t see what this has to do with lumberjack cabinet.

Becky asks a legitimate question: what’s the difference between Wiess Court and UCourt? It’s a little hazy, but Wiess Court can refer things to UCourt. Or, if you receive a violation, you can contest it, and the panel of 15 UCourt students, will review it.

Brain asks what the punishments for internet piracy are going to be. Lots of other people seem interested in this question too. Lilly has the answer! The official message from IT: your first violation is $150. After that, you’re suspended (from the internet.) And that is actually as lenient as it gets, since Rice mediates between students and companies, so – don’t pirate stuff!
MENTORS!

Lauren, Bahrom, and Nathan are back, with a new-and-improved budget for the mentors society! They want money for laminated, monthly table schedules (like other colleges have), and for food and supplies for career and research-oriented and study breaks.

Gabi points out that a much larger portion of the budget is alloted to evens in the sciences than in the (comparitively underserved) humanities. They agree to rexamine their budget with the mentors.

We motion to give them $500 from an H-fund of Erika and Alisher’s choosing.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

David Payne is the man with the answers. He explains all the projects we’re considering for the upcoming year.

1) The first is getting two benches (like the benches in our alcoves, but with backs) for the Acaterrace using $800 of our $4,400 ambiance funds from H&D. We motion to take the free money.

2) We want a large whiteboard. Like Will Rice and Lovett have (except Lovett has a blackboard), except better. If we actually pay for it, the max we’d pay is $160. It would go where the athletics board currently is, in front of the staircase.

The (small) whiteboard downstairs is porcelain or ceramic, so it doesn’t “ghost,” DPayne tells us. Someone from Sid suggests we go the panels-from-Home-Depot route. But apparently, the whiteboard sheets that they sell at Home Depot are a different material and cause ghosting. (David Payne IS the knowledge vault.)

We’re a bit torn between black and white boards, but that’s why Becky sent us a a survey!

3) We might get a game system to make the upper commons more usable. They’re thinking a Wii, in a security box to prevent theft. Controllers and games, theoretically, would be kept with the game reps, and checked out via an ID system. We’d pay $200-250 for all of this stuff. For a second, Bekah thinks David means the small, analog TV. David laughs, “God no!” and clears that up.

Lilly points out that a lot of people use the commons to study, and an upstairs game system would make it really loud – moreso than games like foosball or pool. David says that brings up the question: “What do we want the upper commons to be?”

David says, yes, you can hear things when they’re done in the upper commons. (We snicker at this.) Right now, the space is very “in-between.” It has some things that people kind of use, but in general it stays pretty quiet.

Bahrom says, no offense, but that’s what the OC lounge is for. Brian says there’s the library – 6th-floor Fondren – for people to study silently. Bobby says the commons is supposed to be a social space. The OC kids are turning on their own kind! Bekah says that other colleges have hang-out spaces, and she’s really jealous.

Things are getting heated, but one thing we can agree on is a Becky survey!! And also that alliterative names are cool.
COMMUNITY GARDEN TOOLS

Heather asks to install a toolbox next to the bike racks and garden at Wiess. The community garden wants space for a small, secure storage box to store their tools. We approve! By the way, 4:30 on Sundays is when they meet, if you ever want to garden!

SALSA NIGHT

AKA the other best public party on campus, is coming up soon, on November 18th! Rebekah and Jacinta open the culturals budget to pay our awesome DJ.

IMPACT

Mia Velazquez, Sid president and an Impact staffer, is here with Risa! Impact, they tell us, is the only student-led leadership retreat for freshmen and sophomores. They’re going to be sticking around after cabinet to answer any questions.

SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME

Lilly and Ian, two of our beloved NOD Security Heads, pose an interesting question: “Do you want…NOD to happen?…Because if NOD is going to happen, and we know you want it to happen, we need 140 people.”

If you want the party and awesome things to happen, you have to do security (“Join Dumbledore’s Army.”) Email ricenodsecurity@gmail.com to sign up or ask questions.

Cabinet is adjourned!

TFW,

Margay “Can’t wait for Wiess to be Hogwarts” Dean

Fellows Auction Cabinet Minutes!

Carole takes roll and explains the most important rule of the auction: “Just so everyone knows, you have to pay. You can’t get it for free.” Too true. With that, fellows cab is off and running!

ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Officer Rash is here! He works every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and every other Wednesday from 6p.m. – 8a.m. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with him for any reason (he’s really nice)! Tonight, he’s here to educate us with an acronym: I.C.E. – in case of emergency. He says we should use our cell phones to keep us safe. List your mom, roommate, boyfriend, just someone who cares about you – and save them under “ICE” in your cell phone.

Matthew Bonham is… the new Chief Justice for Wiess! He’ll send us an email real soon with his phone number! Make sure to contact him before parties and shindigs.

ERIKA & SAL
are selling 3 cooking classes, with equipment and ingredients provided. They will make red velvet cake balls, cheesecake, and Reese’s or Twix or “some chocolately thing” – inside of a cookie. Bernard has shifty eyes when he bids. But Kyle’s eyes are shiftier. He buys Erika and Sal for $31.

But for everyone who didn’t win a medley of Erika and Sal’s baked goods, consider taking Erika and Tiffany’s STC next semester on baking!

EVAN & SHERRY
are offering a getaway to Surfside, one of the country’s top-ranked beaches! There will be a campout, s’mores, gas, and a chance to meet Sherry’s parents. Also, a ¼-eaten red velvet cake. Plus, 3 trips on Saturday nights to Target, etc. for up to 8 people. Hadi snags them for $65.

BUDGET!
Erika and Alisher tell us that Rice ended up – surprise! – using the old formula for allocating funds to the colleges. Oh, Rice, always keeping us guessing. This means that we got more money than we budgeted for. Old funds from Sparky’s and the movie room renovation have successfully been moved, but we’re still in the hole. They’ll keep us posted.

JEFF & AMANDA
tell us we could all use a little more culture. (speak for yourselves, Jeff and Amanda.) They are selling a beverages-and-cheese-fruit-

cracker picnic at Hermann park, to see a live jazz concert. The stakes get higher when they offer free back rubs (Amanda is a pro). Joseph buys them for $32.

ZAC & BRE
NO JOKE are offering to MAKE A BABY, and GIVE IT TO YOU. SEX. SUPER-EXCITING. They clarify that by SEX they actually mean “cookies, cupcakes, and SHIT.” And watching Clueless with candles in the movie room. And oh did they mention CUPCAKES. With your FACE ICED ONTO THEM. James buys their lovechild for $35.

JEN & ADRIEN
are selling a multi-part extravaganza, starting with an award-winning Jen pie! (She’s a two-time county champ, she’ll have you know). They’ll also take a trip to a pumpkin patch for pumpkin picking and carving. They will also write a song about you and perform it in the quad on your birthday! – or at some other time that you’d like.

Cody bids against himself – he is serious about pie, pumpkins, and songs/narcissism. But Keemberly edges him out with a bid of $50.

SA SHENANIGANS
Monica brings us the latest: She tells us that apparently, Rice is not competitive with our peer institutions as far as language (sucks to your v2c, Leebron). Now, there are talks of language classes meeting 5 times per week instead of 1-3 times. Also, last Tuesday was the SA/GSA research mixer for everyone except Humanities students – there were research opportunities for undergrads, and free Thai food.

ALISHER & RISA
are offering an autumn-themed excursion, including a trip to a haunted house, where you will receive emotional support from Alisher, and “watch Risa flip shit.” Afterward, there’ll be a corn maze, and pumpkin carving – a day of “good clean country fun!” I’m intrigued by the corn maze idea, and “good clean country fun” is hereby on my senior-year bucket list. Max pounces on the autumn getaway, and wins with a $35 bid.

RUTHIE – T-SHIRT $?$?$?
Ruthie needs to open nonbudgeted for $500 for t-shirts! The motion passes, no questions asked. Someone points out that we just gave Ruthie a lot of money without asking what she’s up to. We’re not sure what’s happening, but Ruthie looks confident! The motion passes again.

ALYSA & TYLER
are taking three lucky bidders on a Houston tour of frozen yogurt (at least 3-4 different places). They clarify that you are encouraged to sample and try yogurt, at all of the locations. Froyo on the head fellows is won by Kunle, for $45. For sweet, sweet sustenance after his car-pushing misadventures.

BECCA & JOHN
invite you to join Becca’s parents in a hot tub. Six lucky winners will get to visit to the exotic home of Becca! Featuring the trifecta: Kitchen. Table. Hottub. (and also, Aromatherapy). The bidding is tense: Thomas Ladd will not back downnnn, but the Jaffes slip away from him. Caleb wins with $61, and smiles his Caleb smile.

INGRID – FRESHMAN STUDY BREAKS
Ingrids reminds us that the freshman reps are planning four study breaks, so that freshmen can co-mingle with different classes. And they don’t even need any money! The treasurers rejoice.

RUTHIE & SHAWDON
are selling a tea party! With tea in real tea cups, and cupcakes and brownies! It is to be held in the RMC pavilion, which everyone knows, is really, really pretty (true facts). To top it off, Ruthie already has the cutest invitations! Max (glasses) asks if there will be a mad hatter. “There could be,” says Sly Ruthie. Alisher wins their tea party for $50.

QUINCY & JAKE
present A Night With The Elderly. But they can’t tell us the deets just yet, because cabinet has erupted in a series of Jake-specific cheers. Carole restores order. Quincy and Jake, it seems, will dress as old people and serve cookies with warm milk. Truly, geriatric things are underrated things. There will be bingo, and storytime with old man Keller. Storytime can consist of books…or embarrassing Jake stories! Chloe is eager for some Jake gossip and wins Quincy and Jake for $36.

RHAs – CAREGIVER TRAINING!
People, especially BC, are bidding out of turn. But the RHAs will not be bought. Instead, Bre and Bobby tell us about the caregiver study break that was held on Tuesday. Now, our own Wiess RHAs can host caregiving sessions, so no more walkin’ to the Wellness Center or poopy Brown! Bobby says the training is literally 45 minutes long, and it’s a movie. Literally.

It’s important that everyone get trained, because NOD’s coming up, we need caregivers, and it’s just plain useful information to know. So keep your eyes peeled for upcoming emails – they’ll send deets!

KUNLE & CAMILLE
are selling a pool party at Camille’s house, with outdoor grills and outdoor TVs, and outdoor fun! Marie wins their party for $61!

KYLE & JENNY
are selling one of Kyle’s homemade dinners and delicious treats baked by Jenny. Kyle says that he doesn’t cook without his faithful Mark Plitt by his side, so Mark Plitt will also be there! Mark will also make his world-famous dip. Kaylee wins their delightful dinner for $65.

TIFFANY & PETER
are wearing sexy bathrobes. Which makes sense when they reveal that they’re selling “chocolate dreams.” They will massage you into a luscious, deep sleep, with chocolate. There will be 60 minutes of massage time, divided however you want between Tiffany and Peter. There will also be a delicious dessert extravaganza with a chocolate fountain and marshmallows. They will also serenade you with either music or a movie. (Kunle demands both.)

The bidding gets ridiculous. Alliances are made and broken. Finally, Wei wins, with a bid of $50. Hooray for chocolate dreams!

SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME

Ruthie is iffy about sitting on the seat of shame, and so we are iffy about listening to her. But then she sits, and tells us that the Wiess tailors have meetings on Tuesday nights at 9! She loves to teach people, so no prior experience is necessary to hang with the tailors! There are also no gender requirements. Often, they drink tea and have sweets. Emily Nichol only has one knitting needle, and she asks if they have some to spare. They do. The Wiess tailors sure sound nice! Ruthie asks for money for goldenrod yarn. We give her $70 from creativity. And she’ll see you at knit club!

Chloe tells us to go to Willy’s statue (last) Friday at noon, and she can’t say more.

CABINET ADJOURNED!

The Rice Muslim Student Association cordially invites you to participate in our Annual Fast-a Thon on Saturday Oct. 15th.

Fast-A-Thon is an event held every year in the fall semester where we encourage Rice students and staff members to fast for an entire day. At the end of the day, those who participated gather to break their fast with food catered by a local restaurant.

For every person who pledges to fast, the Rice MSA donates money to a charity. This year, all donations will go to the Dadaab refugee camps situated at the Kenyan-Somali borders where almost 400,000 people are desperately trying to survive the severe drought conditions that have plagued East Africa for months. The money will be sent to Muslims Without Borders, a non-profit humanitarian organization that has launched the first national food drive for East Africa, to purchase food and supplies for the drought victims.

For those interested, we please ask that you RSVP via the Google link below:
WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GIS?
Viewing and analyzing the world through computer mapping is getting more exciting every day. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are being used for everything from simple navigation on Google Maps to more complex cartography, spatial analysis, and modeling using ArcGIS software.
Each short course offered by the GIS/Data Center at Fondren Library here at Rice is a FREE, one-time introductory course on a different topic, mostly relying upon the popular GIS software, ArcGIS Desktop 10. The short courses offered by the GIS/Data Center are very basic and strive to form a strong foundation of GIS software knowledge. They are structured to teach central concepts and tools necessary to complete a broad spectrum of GIS projects and analysis.
This is the second time we are offering many of these courses this semester.
For course listings and descriptions, please visit our GIS Short Courses webpage.
For scheduled dates and times, please visit http://library.rice.edu/gis-calendar.
Hi, my name is David Sullivan and I have recently started an engineering club at Rice University called Impossible Challenges. We will be taking on a series of nearly impossible engineering challenges, including an attempt to launch a microsatellite into orbit for ~$2000 per kilogram. If taking on complex engineering challenges appeals to you, come to our next meeting this Sunday at 8PM in the OEDK. If you have any questions, or can’t make it to the meeting but still want to be involved, email me at dms5@rice.edu. I hope to see you this Sunday.

INNOVATION IN THE CONTROL OF THE NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES

by

Peter J. Hotez, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, discusses the efforts of the Sabin Vaccine Institute to develop vaccines that eradicate the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). NTDs are a group of 17 common parasitic and related infections that most commonly afflict the 1.4 billion people worldwide who live below the World Bank poverty level (?the bottom billion?). These diseases are major poverty promoting conditions of the poor, as they profoundly impact child development and worker productivity. The Sabin Vaccine Institute?s Global Network for NTDs delivers low-cost treatment packages to affected regions for seven of the most common NTDs, which has led to progress toward the elimination of lymphatic filariasis, river blindness and trachoma. For the other NTDs, however, a new generation of antipoverty drugs and vaccines will be required. In order to facilitate development of these innovative products, the Sabin Vaccine Institute has relocated its laboratories to Texas Children?s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine. In his lecture, Hotez discusses new opportunities for collaboration for the institute, which, with partners around the world including researchers and investigators across the Texas Medical Center, is working to develop new vaccines for hookworm infection, schistosomiasis and Chagas disease.

MAKE RICE BETTER: RESET project

Do you like the Rice campus or the environment? Would you like the chance to spend $15,000 to make Rice?s campus better?

If you answered yes to either of these questions then submit a project proposal to the Rice Endowment for Sustainable Energy Technology (RESET) or email Ricereset@gmail.com to get more information.

In 2010, the Rice student body approved a $9 blanket tax to fund the Rice Endowment for Sustainable Energy Technology (RESET). RESET then uses this money to finance student-led initiatives that promote energy efficiency and sustainability on campus. Learn more about this at the info lunch where we will have inspiring project ideas, food, and Rice University faculty/staff to bounce ideas off of.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

For more information about RESET including possible project ideas and example proposals, visit reset.rice.edu or contact us at ricereset@gmail.com.

The Rice Efficient Computing Group is looking for volunteers to participate in a 2-month long smartphone study. Our project aims to find correlations between user mood states and smartphone interaction. During the study, participants will use our app to enter their mood four times a day, a process that takes roughly 10 seconds. For active participation in the study, users will be compensated with $75 and be entered into a raffle for an iPad2.

You are eligible for the study if you have an iPhone 4/3GS that is jailbroken (using jailbreakme.com or other low-risk utilities that you can find online). Please find more information on the study at http://tinyurl.com/ricemood or contact Robert LiKamWa at roblkw@rice.edu. Hey Seniors!

In each year’s Campanile, we have a senior section, dedicated to recognizing your accomplishments. You are welcome to submit a senior portrait to be used in the section, and you can get your senior portrait taken tonight for free at Picture Yourself. You also have the option of signing up to have your copy of this year’s Campanile shipped to you for free, and you can talk to us about setting that up at Picture Yourself as well. So, if you’d like to get a head start on the many, many things you need to do before you graduate, just come take a senior portrait and ask us about shipping information at Picture Yourself, tonight in the Grand Hall from 6 pm until midnight. Also, be on the lookout for more information about portraits, ads, and shipping, coming later this semester.

About the Event
Borders have a long history of determining how countries interact with one another politically, economically and socially. Border management policies have dramatically gained importance as countries and regions integrate at accelerated rates. Through these policies, decision-makers have the power to promote or hinder the social and economic development of neighboring countries and regions. In addition, national policies also have significant local implications that impact the daily lives of people living in border regions.
The current borders in the Americas are the result of historical events such as wars, colonization and negotiation. Today some border regions enjoy political and economic stability while others are areas of tension and controversy.
This panel, which is part of the Americas Project 2011 Colloquium, brings together three experts to discuss sovereignty and territorial disputes, socioeconomic challenges driving migration, and transnational organized crime along porous borders. Throughout the course of the colloquium, this year?s Americas Project participants ? 15 young leaders from different countries across the hemisphere ? will engage in a series of roundtable discussions about these timely and critical topics while sharing unique insights from their broad range of professional and cultural backgrounds.
Dear students,

As the event manager of the upcoming 6th Annual Sally Ride Science Festival scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 2011 (less than a month away) I am writing to you to ask you to please help ME by volunteering your time and talent. We are in need of 50-55 individuals who would be willing to make this a special day for ~1,300 middle school girls who will be in attendance. The event takes place in our beautiful campus (Engineering Quad) and it promises to be a fun-filled-day with a free lunch, street fair, interesting booths, DJ on site, experiments, workshops and a keynote by a woman astronaut.

If you know of any High School students who are in need of community service hours please ask them to contact me at umbe@rice.edu. We would be glad to provide them with a “Volunteer Certificate.” – For college/grad students volunteers: This will look good on your résumé.

For more information on the festival please check this link: https://www.sallyridescience.com/festivals/11rice1022 or check the Sally Ride Science Festival Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257032741003933

Shift #2 — 11:30am – 4:15pm

You folks will be our “workshop volunteers” – with the primary responsibility of getting the kids to their workshops and safely back again. We have quite an intricate process (and haven’t lost a kid yet…) – so once everyone checks in for this shift we’ll have on-the-spot training. Shift #2 folks: It’s really important that you arrive on time!

AND OUR GENEROUS VOLUNTEERS: ALL DAY! (9:30 – 4:15)

Don’t forget that you get a “free lunch” in partial thanks for your work with us. Also, you’re welcome to attend the keynote by a woman Astronaut.

? Five winning student orgs will receive $5,500 to put towards Zipcar memberships and driving credit (each of the runner-ups will receive $1,000).
Impact Rice Retreat (IRR)
The Impact Rice Retreat is the only official leadership retreat on campus for freshman and sophomores that is entirely student led. Impact is held once a year at the beginning of the Spring semester and takes place off campus for an entire weekend.
Impact is staffed and coordinated by juniors and seniors who have participated in the retreat as freshmen or sophomores and have extensive experience developing their residential colleges and campus-wide student organizations. Staff members routinely consist of Club, College and Student Body Presidents, O-Week Coordinators and Beer Bike Coordinators. Students who participate in Impact come away with a stronger network of friends, as well as the knowledge and skills necessary to make an actual impact on campus – and they have a lot of fun in the process! Former impact participants have gone on to quite literally run the university.
Applications are out (see Freshmen and Sophomore sections below) and due back by 5pm on Tuesday on October 11, 2011.

Hi everyone!

The Wellness Center is planning a video campaign about mental health featuring students and faculty from Rice. We are currently in the process of trying to find volunteers to participate and help with this video. It is our hope that through this campaign we can de-stigmatize mental health and address any myths regarding mental health.

If you have experience with mental health and/or you know someone with mental health and are comfortable being in this video campaign, please email Melody Yee at msy1@rice.edufor additional information.

Thank you so much!

Greetings,

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research is pleased to announce the upcoming lecture of its distinguished speaker series.

In recent years, college and university life has been dominated by a culture of excessive alcohol consumption. Though these problems have been addressed by campus policies such as bans on hard liquor and other forms of alcohol abuse, these rules remain difficult to enforce and threaten to drive the problem of binge-drinking underground.

To discuss some of these trends, Dr. Richard Rogers will be delivering a talk entitled: “Alcohol Consumption and Mortality.”

A professor of sociology and director of the Population Program in the Institute for Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Dr. Rogers will explore the health effects of alcohol consumption. Please see attached flyer for more information about the event or visit: http://kinder.rice.edu/richard-rogers.aspx

Date/Time: Wednesday, September 21 at 4PM
Place: Herring Hall 100

This event is open and free to the public. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this special lecture.

Light refreshments will be served before the lecture.

This event is being co-sponsored by Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research and the Center for Drug and Social Policy Research at the University of Houston.

Hello!

We are starting our new year of programming for international students and are looking for student leaders to participate as International Liaisons (ILs). We are looking to revamp the program with more interactions and this year we’ll have some funding for some great events!

The program is looking for (non-first year) students who are interested in getting involved with the international students on campus. The applications (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHhhanlHZ3luTGs4czhUeVA4Z05XSGc6MQ ) are available to both US citizens and international students.

After the application process, we’ll let the finalists know when we’ll have the upcoming training (about 1 hour). The program will focus on how to prepare for your role within the colleges and will include information on acculturation topics that may arise.

We are excited to invite each of you to join us in this new program as leaders. You will be given a placard for your room door so that students in need can find you easily if you live on campus. We will also develop the IL webpage (http://oiss.rice.edu/gateway.aspx?id=990) more with details as they come.

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Hey everyone! We’re the Rice University Google Campus Ambassadors, and
it’s our job to:

- Come up with excuses to give away FREE GOOGLE STUFF!
- Provide information about Google Apps for Education’s implementation
at Rice University
- Spread Google+ and Google Apps promotions
- Answer Google-related questions
- Let you know about the Google intern/job recruiters and when they’re
coming on campus
And of course…
- Throw the first Google themed study break!

BUT until then, follow the link below to sign up for a Google+

For those of you who don’t know, Google Plus is a new social network
tied into the Google product line. It’s awesome, especially because we
can use Google+ for event publicity that we can’t otherwise use
Facebook for. Among other features, Google+ has “circles” for extra
privacy, 10-way video chat, instant photo upload from your android
phones, group instant messaging via SMS texting, contact syncing, and
much more.

Also, if you get a Google Plus account and add us into your circles,
you’ll receive messages about where and when we’ll be randomly giving
out free Google t-shirts!

“After you’re gone, how will you be remembered? Do the devices that drive our compulsively communicative society really connect us, or just isolate us? And what do caramel popcorn and embossed invitations have to do with romance, Johannesburg, and the letter Z?

These are all questions that drive Sarah Ruhl’s absurdist romantic comedy Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a play that “blends the mundane and the metaphysical, the blunt and the obscure, the patently bizarre and the bizarrely moving” (Charles Isherwood, New York Times).

When the normally restrained Jean finds her meal at a quiet diner disrupted by her neighbor’s ringing phone — a call he can’t answer, reasonably enough, because he is deceased — she soon finds it opens the way to a looking-glass world of mystery, treachery, love, and confusion. From city streets to high society, from airport lounges to the stratospheric laundromats of heaven, Dead Man’s Cell Phone offers up quirkily real people navigating their way through surrealist fantasies. The characters struggle to find their way through the morass of mundanity, guided by the illogic of their dreams and feelings.”

Student tickets $5 | faculty $8
Hey Rice!
Rice Model Arab League is looking to recruit you to kick butt at a regional conference held in Houston this year! What is Model Arab League you ask? Well, its just like Model UN but far more awesome because the Arab world is not short on excitement or revolutions is this year. Our team is representing Libya and so we have the privilege of wearing cool Gaddafi-esque outfits, sleeping in tents, and making Condi scrapbooks.
If you are at all interested in the Arab world, understanding the revolutions, meeting new people, and kicking butt on a regional level, join our team and come to our meetings! And email me at bfa1@rice.edu if you have any questions.
Thanks!
Hey Rice!

The RSVP Education Committee, The Mentorship Project, HACER, and BSA are partnering for a special SAT Mentoring Program at Eastwood Academy. Students at Eastwood are bright and hardworking, but have often missed out on some basic guidance key to doing well on the SAT. This is your opportunity to fill that void and ensure that they show colleges their best self.

We are looking for mentors who can commit to working with Eastwood Academy students for three Saturday sessions on Sept. 17, 24, and Oct. 1 in preparation for the October 8th SAT date. Mentors will leave Rice at 9:30am and return by 12:30pm.

If you are interested in volunteering, please attend our brief info and training session this Tuesday, September 13th, 7-8pm in the RMC 2nd Floor Conference Room. If possible, please bring your driver’s license and your laptop so that we can get you through the HISD Volunteer Clearance Process.

If you have any questions, please contact Roshni Patel (rhp1@rice.edu) or Gabe Cuadra (Gabe.Cuadra@rice.edu).

Hello all,

Greeting from the UT School of Public Health! I’m writing you on behalf of The Board, an up-and-coming leadership and management student organization.. We formed last spring and are hoping to hit the ground this semester with educational and networking opportunities for students. We are geared primarily toward healthcare management students, but we are hoping to recruit students from all walks of public health (health promotion and behavioral science, epi, biostats, and environmental health)

As part of our efforts, we’d like to extend an invitation to any Rice students interested in attending our first speaker of the semester. Michelle Deckelbaum, the Director of Operations at Methodist, will be speaking about Process Improvement: Practical Applications of Six Sigma and Lean on September 21 from 4:30-6:00pm at SPH.

I was given a link to your emails by a former Rice student, Ricky Mercado. He told me you might be able to forward my email to a large number of students. Also, if there’s a faculty member that might be better-suited to correspond with me, please feel free to forward this message to he or she, as well.

Thank you and please excuse such a long-winded, unexpected email!

Best regards,
Paul Newhouse (PR Director for The Board)

The Rice Student Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Graduation Student Association (GSA) will host three blood drive dates beginning Tuesday, September 6 – Thursday, September 8. The GSA’s drive will be held on Tuesday, September 6 from 9:30am-2:00pm in the Wellness Center Room 160B. RSVP’s drives will be held Wednesday, September 7 and Thursday, September 8, 10:00am-4:00pm each day, in the Farnsworth Pavilion of the Ley Student Center.

Rice University participates with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center as a “Commit For Life” partner. Through this relationship, Rice University sponsors 4 blood drives annually to help meet the needs of over 220 health care institutions in a 24-county Texas Gulf Coast region.

There is no substitute for blood. It has to come from one person in order to give to another. A critical number of voluntary donations are required every day to meet the need for blood in the Gulf Coast region. However, we are consistently falling short, and falling short means we may not have enough blood for someone like you. The process of giving blood takes about 1 hour. Appointments are encouraged and will be given priority, but walk-ins are always welcome.

**********

TO SIGN UP TO DONATE:

1. Go to http://www.eblooddrive.org.
Can you give 10 inches of hair to make a difference in the life of a child? On Monday, September 19, Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) will be providing free haircuts and collecting hair to make prosthetic hair devices for children with medical illness. This hair drive, our first to benefit Locks of Love in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, will be held from 10 am to 4 pm in the Hess Private Dining Room of the RMC.

CAC has brought in a leading Houston stylist to provide cuts and styles to students who participate. Students who donate 10 or more inches of hair will receive a free cut and style ($70 value). Students who donate less than 10 inches of hair can receive cuts and styles for $25. The person who donates the most hair will receive a $50 gift card. All hair donors will also be eligible to win exciting prizes through a random drawing.

To sign up for a time you must complete the attached registration form. Priority will be given to students registering by Monday, September 12. There are opportunities for everyone to be a part of the fun by raising money and serving as an event volunteer. In addition, a $25 gift card will be awarded to the top fundraiser of each college and GSA.

Drawing on extensive new research, John M. Logsdon, Ph.D., professor emeritus of political science and international affairs at The George Washington University?s Elliott School of International Affairs and founder of the university?s Space Policy Institute, discusses his book ?John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon? (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). Logsdon presents a definitive account of Kennedy?s decision to send Americans to the moon and of how that decision was implemented by the president and his associates during his tragically short time in the White House. The book traces the evolution of Kennedy?s thinking and policies regarding Project Apollo, including the president’s hope of collaborating, rather than competing, with the Soviet Union ? a possibility that was soon abandoned after his assassination.

So, I’m pretty sure this is only funny at 2am. Source: random guy on fb.
Fun things to do to a roommate:

2. Every time you enter the room, sit in a chair, lean back too far, and fall over backwards. Laugh hysterically for about ten minutes. Then, one day, repeat the falling-over exercise, but instead of laughing, get up, look at the chair sternly, and say, “It’s not funny anymore.”

7. Pack up all of your things and tell your roommate that you’re going away to “find yourself.” Leave, and come back in about ten minutes. If your roommate asks, explain that you’re not a hard man to find.

11. Hang a picture of your roommate on the wall. Throw darts at it. Smile at your roommate often, saying things like, “How nice to see you again.”

47. Every time your roommate comes in, immediately turn off the lights and go to bed. When he/she leaves, get up and loudly yell, “Okay, guys, you can come out now.”

56. Sign your roommate up for various activities. (Campus tour guide, blood donor, organ donor).

69. Put up flyers around the building, reporting that your roommate is missing. Offer a reward for his/her safe return.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
- The sophomore reps will have you know that they sleep naked, thank you very much.
- Thursday (today!) is the study abroad fair from 11a.m.-2p.m. at the Brochstein Pavilion.
- Mark announces that all-star associate Mikki Hebl is bringing back Team Running Wiess! Christa’s legacy lives on!
- Bobby just bought a TFW football! Don’t let it hit the concrete, and only use it for Wiess activities, he says.
- Carole says to join the NOD decorations committee! It’s fun, and a great way to get freshman service points. Email cbm3@rice.edu to join!
- Trevor says the VGA cable is missing – bring it back to Nancy’s office with no questions asked. (John Michael: “Or we could start a witch hunt…”)

BUDGET!
Erika and Alisher are still working on getting us out of the proverbial hole. So don’t spend so much money! (But still come up with creative, Wiess-bolstering ways for us to spend money!)

SA SHENANIGANS
Monica brings us tidings of joy from Monday’s SA meeting. First, that the SA is still figuring out where all the stolen KTRU booty will be spent across campus. Also, Rice’s CollegeProwler ratings have gone up! Also, St. Arnold’s Centenni*Ale – it’s coming. And will be sold at the downtown Spec’s and served at some Rice functions this year.

OC LUNCHES
Jay and Lilly bring it to our attention that Wiess has not been able to provide OC lunches so far this year. The prob: the servery is charging more money than in previous years, and we can’t pay their exorbitant fees for a weekly sandwich bar. Jay and Lilly have talked to the manager in the servery and report that while the servery is still kind of our nemesis, Julie Bogar is “really, really nice!” and is trying to work with them.

Jay and Lilly suggest some alternatives:
For $4.50/person, OC kiddos can enter the servery twice a month. Many of us think this is not frequent enough to encourage people to dine at Wiess. Or, Hanzen does this thing where they provide 6 pizzas (from the servery) for $60. Lilly says they also looked at outside options for having pizza delivered, “And it was stupid. Really stupid.” Meaning, delivery costs too much. BC suggests they approach restaurants Wiess has worked with before and ask about college discounts.

We talk money. The treasurers clarify that the current OC budget of $120 is not typically for OC lunches, but for OC camp-outs and marshmallows and such. In the past, OC lunches were funded by a mysterious meal subsidies budget that Alisher is exploring… Cabinet votes to try the servery pizza option for one week and see what the turnout is like. (But keep fighting, OC kids! Do not go gentle into that good night!)

In the mean time, remember that everyone with a meal plan has 5 guest meals/semester! So, share with a needy OC kid near you! <333

ECO REPS – BIKE SHARING!
John and Heather are our eco reps! And they want to bring bike sharing to us! Other colleges have instituted the program, and they want to bring it to Wiess to see how it works.

How it works: we get 5 bikes that RUPD has confiscated (curses!). Then a Sid guy fixes them up and gives them to us. Emily points out that it’s like ZipCars for bikes. The eco reps say they’ll spray paint the bikes bright goldenrod (is there any other kind?), so that people will be less likely to take BikeShare bikes.

BikeShare wants us to lay down $50 up front, for repairs that may arise. However, it’s unclear whether the deposit will be returned to Wiess if no repairs are necessary.

STUDENT-TAUGHT COURSES!
Brooke and Heather are the STC co-chairs. They want to hold a study break to talk about STCs and watch Accepted. Cabinet asks them to collaborate with Nathan, who is in charge of the study break budget.

COMMUNITY SERVICE!
Meredith and Alexa are our community service reps. They’re requesting that Wiess nominate someone to represent our college in the Mr. Rice pageant. A deep voice in the back says, Oh hello, John. The CS reps explain that the qualifications are that our nominee be nice, funny, hot, have great smile, and black socks. There is a consensus that we will have John Michael as our nominee, and no other.

AS CRAZY AS IT SOUNDS…
There is a really eccentric alumnus from Rice who wants to give money to all the colleges, but only for ping-pong tables, or for new facilities to be used for ping-pong. Charlie asks whether we would like some ping-pong tables.

Trevor makes a suggestion, via Kunle, that it should be a beer pong facility instead, because people would actually use that a lot. Maybe the alumnus knows that? Someone asks if he could give us money for our ping-pong dispenser, or for new balls. BC says we should build a facility on top of the campus parking garage. Many people like this idea.

CAB’NET AND HUTCH
Dean Hutchinson wants to come to cabinet to talk to us! Charlie wants to know if his visit should be pre- or post-NOD. Emily points out that there’s a cabinet on October 19th, a week and a half before NOD. By then, we’d know who’s opening their rooms for private parties, and we could ask them to attend. Second idea: we could invite him to fireside chats again. Mark asks if we can make sure Baker 13 will run through again. Charlie’s going to see what he can do. (If Baker 13′s busy, maybe the sophomore reps could lend their services?)

We take a straw poll, and we vote for a fireside chat, to be held before NOD.

TGIF
Back when Wiess was cool, there were beautiful, beautiful parties called TGs (Dr. Byrd tells us this – don’t call them “TGIFs” unless you’re a noob). Dr. Byrd says they happened every week, and that sometimes there were several TGs at once. As he recalls, they were a circle of people tightly packed together, like, around something. He’s not sure what – he never saw what was in the middle.

Charlie wants to bring this tradition back, to make Friday afternoons more happenin’, and Wiess even cooler! They would take place from about 3-7p.m., and would involve refreshments and intercollegiate bonding. He’s talked with the other South colleges, and they’re down. WRC is the only one in the periphery.

Gabi asks who would be in charge of those. Not socials, don’t worry! Ruthie says she prefers just collaborating with one college at a time, since then we can meet more people instead of being overwhelmed by the strangers and just going off with our friends.

SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME SEAT OF SHAME
Ben had a great idea! He wants to throw a Wiess Connect dance party! Alisher has the first question: “You can only have 2 people at a time, right?” Ben: “I’m aware of that.” (Silence). Ben continues: Connect is different from DDR, in that it is actually dancing. And it’s more intense! He’d like to hook up the game in the commons and use the projector. He asks for money for food and drinks. The socials suggest giving $60, since that is about what cabinet food costs. We vote to give Ben $60 from the creativity fund, because if that’s not creative, I don’t know what is!
-
Lilly and Ben: Lilly joins Ben atop the seat of shame. She want to clarify her role on the IT task force. She says that she is “the Wiess IT ambassador – the mouthpiece of IT, and it’s not that funny, BC.” So, if you need IT help, contact helpdesk@rice.edu, or contact Ben. If you contact her, she can only put you in touch with IT or with Ben. Then, it’s Ben’s turn to clarify his role. He says he’s not technically in charge of the paper or the scanner or the printer (though he’s really nice and has helped out a lot in the past). Problems should be reported to IT.
-
Bahrom and Lauren are two of the three head mentors. They currently have $50 in their mentor budget. They have a variety of events in mind for this year, but need more resources. Other colleges have much larger budgets, and they’d like to expand the Wiess mentors program as well. They mention ideas like gift bags for associates who help us, money for crawfish boils, food for research lab meet-and-greets.

Ruthie asks if there there can be a form where people can make suggestions? When Nathan came to precab, people had some pretty strong ideas about what the mentors could do. Someone also points out that they didn’t mention any activities that are reaching out to the humanities, so maybe that survey would be a good idea. It is also mentioned that they could collaborate with the PCAs and Wiess associates. We agree to talk about money more, soon, and when they have specific expenses in mind.
-
Trevor, the Wiess Brewmaster, wants $60 from creativity for brewing supplies and $10 for a big spoon. These are things that Jeremy Goodreaux owned and that Wiess has yet to buy. For that reason, he suggests that it wouldn’t fall within the parameters of the brewing budget. Trevor says that, honestly, if we just gave him the $60, he could buy his own big spoon, and just make each new person buy his or her own big spoon too.

Adam asks if he can be Trevor’s little spoon. Trevor says no.

We Trevor $70 from creativity to make us tasty beer.

Cabinet adjourned!

GOLDENROD CABINET AKA SPEED CABINET IT IS HAPPENING!!

Charlie welcomes us to the first cabinet of the year, whooo! Excitement is in the air.

We take attendance, but the culturals are conspicuously absent. They appear in the nick of time, narrowly escaping impeachment.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Charlie leads us off with a moment of silence for Ben Thorseth.

David Payne is up next: “We have a new floor in the PDR. It’s very classy, so don’t put anything unclassy in the PDR…” ‘Nuff said. (But also, you can open the left-side door now.)

Dr. Byrd tells us that Anthony Appiah is having dinner at the Wilson house two days ago.

BUDGET

Observing a time-honored tradition, Rice still hasn’t released how much money will be in Wiess’s annual budget…boo. Erika and Alisher (bless their hearts) try to elaborate but are overpowered by the momentum of the crowd, who are eager to Do Other iMportant studEying.

Mark Plitt, while being really happy for Alisher and all, makes a swift motion to reject the budget. Erika and Alisher have more to say, but they are drowned out by the voices of the antsy, antsy crowd. They cede the floor and go off to sob softly.

ALCOHOL PROBATION

Ellory, our resident madame Chief Justice, reminds us it’s still in effect, ‘til indefinitely. Since she doubles as U-court chair, she has the inside scoop: violation of the alcohol probation means automatic rustication, and possible suspension. (She clarifies that 21-year-olds drinking in the privacy their rooms is encouraged, however.)

She also asks that we come up with expectations for Wiess re: drinking and alcohol. The aim is to make a 1-page document-slash-social-contract, similar to alcohol policy, but specific to Wiess.

Then, the other members of Wiess court introduce themselves (see the beautiful commons poster).

SA SHENANIGANS

Monica, our SA senator (“She goes to meetings, so we don’t have to!”) tells us we can get books at Texas Marketplace. Also, if you’re a new student who wants to get involved with the SA, consider being the New Student Rep! Keep your eyes peeled, because she’ll send out apps soon!

Then, we formally secede from SA, yeehaw! It’s a beautiful moment.

FRESHMEN REP SPEECHES!

They’re all so qualified, so sweet, so inspiring. Warm fuzzies ensue.

NATALIE!!!!!!!!

“Whatchu want, Natalie?”

Undergrads to work for her part-time!

“Whatchu need, Natalie?”

…as a part of the Rice Centennials Ambassador’s program. You’ll interview alumni about their Wiess experiences. There’s an app online, due Monday, September 5th. Email Natalie (Nlc1@rice.edu) with any questions!

“What about all the kids looking up to you? Do you have a message for them?…”

SOCIALS! <3

Emily and Gabi remind us that to throw any kind of event with any kind of alcohol, you need people who are alcohol trained! Just a quick little test, and you are certified!

They also need caregivers, though – training is just one hour! Contact Ellory or Charlie with questions. Emily says, “If you like parties, at all, you need to do this.” Next training is September 8th from 4-5p.m. in the Wellness Center classroom.

NOD THEMES!

Start thinking about ‘em. Get your dirty minds a-goin’, and your creative juices a-flowin’!

BIKE TEAM!

Michael and Aaron ask for $200 from the bike team budget to fix bikes! Also, first ride is Saturday at 10:30a.m.

NEWSPAPERS (?)(!)

Ruthie asks if we want to bring newspapers back to Wiess. Bernard offers, “Yes.” Like always, the issue is $$$. But if we raise the issue again, says Ruthie, we can possibly get money from the dean’s office. Fill out Becky’s poll, if you haven’t already!

LISTSERVE RULES, PEOPLE!

Lilly Yu has a bone to pick. You see, it’s come to her attention that some freshman, and Bahrom, do not know how to use the listserve. If you want to listserve something, send it to Wiess via Lilly. Rules:

1) Wiess-related and relevant, only.

2) Please include an email address, so ppl can contact you (not Lilly, who apparently couldn’t care less whether you want to sign up for powderpuff).

a. Related: don’t reply to the listserve (unless you just feel like talking to Lilly, which, let’s face it, who wouldn’t).

3) University events – send to Meredith in the newsletter!

4) Give her 12-hours notice, or, in an emeeeergency, send it to Charlie.

Rule of thumb: if there’s a Wiess rep for it, it’s listserve-worthy.

Addendum: “The newsletter will have a classifieds section soon, so you can sell your cat or your bed, or your favors, except that’s illegal, so don’t do that!” Lilly is good at speed cabinet.

MICHAEL TAKES CREDIT FOR SAVING DIS-O, SINGLE-HANDEDLY.

He explains: “You can’t be awesome without music, and neither can dis-o.” And it was Michael who brought the music to dis-o. He says we need a new sound system, and with it, someone sworn to protect it. Speakers would cost $2,500-6,000, he says.

Brief history lesson. The stacks are kept in 424. The previous owners, while completely loveable and awesome, did not take such great care of them. We bought new stacks 2 years ago, and they’re already sort of kaput. Adam elaborates as only Adam can: “They crackle, sound shitty, beer has been poured on them, and they’ve been left in the rain.”

BC suggests it could be a bad contact, which is an easy fix. The sound board is older, and better wires could improve it too. BC says he will help re-assemble it. We discuss. Someone proposed that whomever’s in charge of stacks should be liable for them. Emily says this maybe could be possible be a new rep position.

We table the issue but agree to look into fixing the stacks before we invest in new ones.

SEAT OF SHAME

Erika and Alisher and back. They say Wiess is $14K in the hole. But, with transfers from our gift account, and shifting Sparky’s and movie room expenses, we should be back in the black (or, “the green,” in Joe Dwyer speak).

They also ask that we come up with ideas for any projects that could better Wiess (esp in the long run). Because, fun fact! Wiess actually does have some money, and we like spending it on worthy projects.

Bobby and Bernard have a lot on their minds. 1) They are working on homecoming event a BBQ at the new Wilson house. There will be BBQ and cocktails. 2) Bobby gets a twinkle in his eye and mentions something about a Wiess men’s calendar (???). 3) Bobby has found lots of t-shirt screens in the screen room – and he’s looking for creative ideas on what to do with them! Email him with ideas.

Finally, don’t forget to do your freshman service hours, because bad things happen if you don’t.

Speed cabinet is adjourned!
